Before And After – "Sanctified"

OK so this song came from two different ideas. Sometimes you have song ideas that just feel “average” but when you combine the stronger parts of each song, hopefully you get a better song…hopefully.

    Did I mention ya’all rock?

Is it just me or does the “after” clip not work? I guess I was a little premature in the previous comment. Ya still rock though!!

I scared my dog by singing along…I was making a joyful noise (so the Lord heard)…obviously there was nothing joyful about it to the dog ;) .

Toby – the after clip worked for me. It was really neat to hear the two different parts of the song – and oh yeah they are totally spectacular together.

(BTW – I enjoyed watching pieces of y’all’s concert on MMTV!)

Hey Toby! How do you get your pic on the post like that?

I was at the concert last night in Salisbury, Md and you guys didn’t dissappoint again! I can’t tell you how powerful your lyrics are to me and help to strengthen my faith. I don’t think I stopped crying all night, which is a good thing. How you all filter the Holy Spirit in your music is such a gift, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing that gift here in such a small area. We love you!

alright! currently one of my favorite songs. I, for one, rather like the ‘Before (1)’ version. The drumming really caught my ear. I think the ‘after’ is best though. :-)

You guys were over in SALSBURY and nobody told me? No fair! I had to watch you guys from over here at my computer from the MMTV. I agree, it was really good. I had to laugh when Bart came in on the wrong key at the beginning of the 2nd or 3rd song. Oh the Joys and Trials of live performance…There was one time i had to do the opening song of a musical with a sprained ankle. (That was NOT fun) But still, NOTHING can compare to the joy of being on stage and performing in front of people.

Sanctified’s been my favorite off the album since the first playthrough, and I really think the it’s the strongest and most-developed. (Oddly enough, I think that God With Us is the WEAKEST of the album.)

This edition of Before and After really is incredibly interesting. Because you can see (or hear, rather) the distinct features of each, separately, that come together in remarkable ways. One of those “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts” things. One of the things that strikes me as odd is how the two separate songs were almost made to go together. (And yes, I do get the irony of that statement, right after I wrote it down.) Heh, wonder how THAT worked out!

Expanding on that, I’m a dedicated bass player, but that riff – that was included but underplayed in the second, yet came across powerfully in the finished product – got me to find an accoustic and utilize my pitiful six-string skills just to figure out just how it works. I don’t think I’d have done it if just a polished version of the second song was on the album, but it’s just so awesome in the finished product that I had to go find it.

Another very interesting factor is the progression of the lyrics. Because in these, you can tell there’s a rough concept hewn out, but it’s not well polished. The introduction of the first is especially notable, I think, considering how clear it is, even if abandoned somewhere along the way. (That “who put a question mark there?” part in the beginning of the was pretty funny, too.)

I wonder how it would turn out if you took both tracks and layered them so they played simultaneously… *Starts figuring out a way to get that to work.*
